On 9/25—one month after Dolly Parton’s passing—we’re looking back at how the 9to5 movement inspired a movie—and how Dolly’s title song helped carry its story to millions.
In 1973, clerical workers formed 9to5 to fight for equal pay, respect, and protection from harassment and Read morediscrimination at work. In 1975, members joined SEIU and formed Local 925 in Boston.
The script for the 1980 film was based on conversations with 9to5 members about what women were experiencing in the workplace. The film marked Dolly Parton’s feature-film debut, and she wrote its title song, which became one of the most recognizable workplace anthems.
More than four decades later, the song still resonates because the fight for fair pay, respect, and dignity at work continues.
